One of the premier ski destinations in the world, chosen as the site of the 2010 winter Olympics, Whistler is a magical wilderness in the Canadian Rockies, in British Columbia just north of Vancouver. Surrounding the European-style tourist-oriented village, at the base of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains are four visually spectacular championship golf courses by top-name architects, making this Canada’s most popular and largest golf mecca.

The golfing season runs from May through the middle of October. At 2,200 feet in elevation, the magenta and blue lupine line the fairways in spring, while alders blaze red and aspens are golden against the dark firs in the fall. On rugged, rocky terraces at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, the Chateau Whistler Golf Club was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., on tilting, terrain studded with monumental granite outcroppings (http://www.chateauwhister.com). Cascading across the course are three glacier-fed streams, spawning grounds for Rainbow and Kokanee trout. Black bears gorge on wild berries in the summertime, while coyotes and deer stand their ground on the edges of the forest. Weir was born in Sarnia, Ontario. He grew up in the suburb of Bright’s Grove, where he learned to golf at Huron Oaks Golf Course. He attended St. Clair Secondary School in Sarnia and is a graduate of Brigham Young University (majoring in Recreation Management). He turned professional in 1992. Weir’s first PGA Tour win came at the 1999 Air Canada Championship in Surrey, British Columbia. The victory made him the first Canadian to win a PGA Tour event in Canada in 45 years.

On April 13, 2003, Weir won the prestigious Masters Tournament at Augusta, Georgia, one of the four Major tournaments in men’s golf. He is the first Canadian ever to win a professional major championship (Sandy Somerville won the U.S. Amateur when it was considered a major tournament). (more…)

Ralph Vold bought back some old grazing land from his brother Harry with a
combination of cattle and cash. The land was in a sand belt and would be perfect for the type of golf course they wanted to build. Late that fall, Ryan Vold and Rod Whitman, the designer, walk the land and begin routing the design in their mind.

1982
Work begins on a new 18 hole course in the san dunes of Central Alberta.

1983
Clubhouse construction begins. The Vold family decide on an old style log building. A log company out of B.C. was hired to build the clubhouse. At over
20,000 square feet it was one of he largest hand carved log buildings in the country. Ralph Vold trades 200 cows for the purchase of the building.

1984
West nine complete and opens for play in August.

1985
East nine opens in the spring.

1987/1999
The Vold family brings in the Alberta Open and Canadian Tour for 13 years in Alberta. It is from this event most of the exposure for the course comes out, including many rave comments from the tour players.

2006
Ground was broken on a new nine holes, short course and subdivision; to be called The Village at Wolf Creek. Anticipated seeding date summer of 2007.
