COURSE REVIEW
Designer:
Peter Chamberlain
Founded:
Par 70 – 5058 m (yellow), 4284 m (red)
Type: Woodland

One of the most tranquil courses in the Oslo region is just a 20 minute drive from the centre of the capital. Asker is a delightful facility set in mature woodland offering glimpses of the fjord with Oslo in the background. On paper, the rolling topography surrounding three natural lakes generates a certain amount of confusion, with the three last holes appearing to be tagged on as an afterthought. In reality, the entire park is a coherent collection of farms, cottages and biotopes so picturesque you feel good just being there. The result is a course that simply blends in with the surroundings. Typical of this type of course is the clever use of natural ridges and undulations left by retreating glaciers. Untypical are five par 5s giving almost 2,300 metres of challenging fairway. The feature hole must be the 18th, a tricky 119-metre water shot in front of the clubhouse that either attracts a round of applause or a great deal of sympathy!

Facilities: Driving range, putting green, practice area, changing rooms, pro-shop, café/restaurant, trolley hire, buggy hire.

COURSE REVIEW
Designer: Robert Trent Jones, Jr
Founded: 2001
Par 72/73 – 6925 m (back tee), 6498 m (yellow), 5325 (red)
Type: Parkland

And the Gods of the North looked down with pride on the world they had created. Thus might Snorri Sturluson of saga fame have described Miklagard Golf Park. Situated about 20 minutes north of Oslo, close to Gardermoen International Airport, the course was officially opened on 8 June 2002 with the intention of being among the world’s best courses according to quality, design and service. Many top European Tour golfers have played Miklagard, including Ian Wosnam, Tony Johnstone and Henrik Bjørnstad. The challenging nature of this championship course certainly impressed the likes of Trevor Immelmann and Robert Karlsson, who described the greens as the best they had ever played on. This is how world renowned architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. describes it: This breathtaking 6707 metre championship course is set in a beautiful farming landscape, its grasses burnished with northern summer sun and glistening in the champagne snow of winter. This is a big, brash course, as impressive as its Norwegian Viking history. It takes fierce, strong men to match its hilly terrain and beautiful Nordic ladies to charm its lake lined and flower laden spring. We are proud to welcome Miklagard into our worldwide family of golf courses.

From the turf-roofed clubhouse to the Norse appellative of the holes, this course is legendary through and through!

Facilities: The practice facilities at the club also offer a great service to all golfing standards. The driving range has a 4000m2 grass tee, chipping green with bunker, 6 hole practice course and a 1200m2 putting green. The restaurant offer a wide range of food from the easiest quick meal to a gourmet dinner in great surroundings, either inside or outside on the patio facing the 18th green. Otherwise all the facilities one would usually expect of a club of this calibre.

COURSE REVIEW
Designer: Jeremy Turner
Founded: 2003
Par 72 – 6490 m (back tee), 5925 m (yellow), 5815 m (red)
Type: Forest/parkland

Since its opening in 2003,  has established itself as one of the best courses west of the Oslo fjord, bearing all the hallmarks of guru golf architect Jeremy Turner. The course is situated in wooded farmland on Nøtterøy near Tønsberg, and is part parkland and part forest, with tree-lined fairways and natural biotopes. On paper it looks easy but Nøtterøy is noted for its challenging layout, fast greens, broad playing surfaces and Turner-esque water hazards. The difficulties are hidden in a rolling landscape that seldom offers a flat lie and in greens with undulations so unbelievably subtle that you often don’t realize a particular ridge exists until you see your ball falling away from the hole. Fairway bunkers and trees squeeze the landing areas and penalise poor concentration. Most greens allow for bump-and-runs, but such shots require impeccable execution, especially with difficult pin positions. Nøtterøy is a must-play for the serious golfer, and the skerries of the Vestfold coast a must-see for the serious tourist!

Facilities: Driving range, putting green, practice area, trolley hire, golfkart hire, club hire, proshop, café.
