Colf In Belgium? A Surprise Golf Tour

BelgiumBefore the world started lusting for Belgian chocolates and diamonds, two popular fictitious characters were the chief claim to fame for this European monarchy. Christie’s quirky detective Herculé Poirot and Herge’s resourceful Tintin have since paved way for beer, lace and hosting of the European parliament in Brussels. And surprisingly for golf or ‘colf’ as the Belgians called their version of the game a century or so ago! Although Belgians have yet to make a big impact on the European Tour, the increasing number of golf tourists opting to include Belgium in their European golf tours is a reliable trend to gauge the game’s increasing popularity in Belgium.

The best thing about a golf holiday in Belgium is its unspoiled terrain and scenic courses undiscovered by golf tours that descend by busloads on unsuspecting links elsewhere. This is one big reason for a lot of golf packages dropping in on Belgium. A golf vacation in Belgium can be relaxing and challenging at the same time, whether you play in the lowlands in Flanders or the Ardennes Mountains in the East. Golf travel to Belgium is affordable and interesting; try the Royal Ostend Golf Club in West Flanders or the Pierpont Golf Club in Brabant and you’ll see what we mean.

Some of our favourtie courses include

Golf Club de Pierpont: One of the toughest courses the Wallonia region has to offer is Pierpont Golf Club. This 18-hole inland links course, bows to daily weather making play easy or downright harrowing. With easy accessibility by road or air, a creative layout and EUR 35, Pierpont gives good value for money on any golf package.

Five Nations Golf Club: Just 30 kms south of Liege is the Gary Player designed Five Nations Golf Club. The course is set in a hilly terrain and can test even the hardiest golfer. An appealing gem from Wallonia, At EUR 35 Five Nations Golf Club is a testing course with a great view of the surrounding valleys. Located near the town of Marche-en-Femme and easily accessible by car, your golf tour itinerary can’t do without it.

Royal Ostend Golf Club: Designed by Seymour Dunn and founded in 1903, the Royal Ostend Golf Club offers all the modern bells & Whistles while giving you a challenging course to play on. Narrow fairways give you a lot of work to do especially when the winds from the sea play havoc. Sitting smack in the middle of the North Sea dunes, this one is the truest links course in Belgium. For just EUR 60 a weekend can be considered well spent at the Royal Ostend links. Keep it firmly on your golf holiday schedule and get to play a historical course commissioned by King Leopold II himself! Royal Golf Club De Fagnes:

The Royal Golf Club De Fagnes is located in the legendary town on Spa and is a private members’ club. But take heart for visitors are allowed for a fee of EUR 46 to EUR 67 on weekends. Designed by Tom Simpson in the 1920s, De Fagnes offers a superlative course filled with open fairways and large bunkers and is very easy on the eye. Include it to add some ‘olde world’ charm to your golf tour.

Numerous other courses would vie for your attention and you will need more than one golf vacation to Belgium to play them all. Given more time you could also tee off on courses like the Brussels golf club, Paul Rolin designed Cleydael golf club just 8 kms south of Antwerp or the Henri-Chapelle golf club one hour north of Spa.
