Pennsylvania Golf Tour - Keystone State Offers History & Golf
When Charles II granted a land charter to William Penn to pay off a debt to his father, little did either know that Penn’s Woods (Penn Sylvania) would become one of the finest golf vacation attractions of the then non-existent United States of America in the 20th century. Today Pennsylvania, one of the original Thirteen Colonies, is one of the fastest growing golf markets in America and attracts dedicated golf travel by car loads every year.

Owing to its diverse geography, Pennsylvania has a golf course on every kind of terrain and offers tracks that are challenging and engaging at the same time. From its mountains to its shores Pennsylvania is home to several impeccably maintained courses and a golf tour of the Keystone State would make you travel far and wide.

Pennsylvania has the distinction of laying out the first golf course in America – The Foxburg Country Club opened in 1887 and is still enthralling golfers from all over the country. Set in Foxburg, a little town on the Allegheny River in northwestern Pennsylvania, Foxburg CC started out as a 9-hole course and plays for a mere $25 on weekends and $20 on weekdays. Add it to your golf package for its historical value and the easy pace of game.

Mark a few days on your golf holiday calendar for Philadelphia or ‘Philly’ to play courses like The GC at Glen Mills, a Robert Weed design figuring consistently on the Golf Digest’s Best Public Courses list. The beauty of the courses lies, more than the very welcome $90 green fees, in the way the course weaves its way in and out of trees and a narrow valley, in the tough, undulating greens and in its old style bunkering.

Other courses in and around Philadelphia that are must plays on any golf holiday are the Rees Jones designed Tattersall Golf Club ($75 - $55), George Fazio layout, the Downington Country Club ($69) and Scotland Run Golf Club ($125). Go north to the Lehigh Valley if you are looking for an affordable golf vacation. Some very interesting courses offered by this region are Olde Homestead ($60 - $45) and Center Valley Golf Club ($85 - $80).

Central Pennsylvania offers tremendous golfing opportunities for players of all skill levels. A satisfying golf package for this region would include the Brian Ault designed Wyncote Golf Club, a heathland style links course in Chester County. Play this 18-hole bliss for ($80 - $65) on your golf holiday and you won’t get over it. Other courses in central Pennsylvania that should be included in your golf tour are the P.B. Dye designed Iron Valley Golf Club ($65 - $45) and The Links at Gettysburg ($84 - $53) located just a few miles south of Gettysburg site of the historic 3-day Civil War battle.

Pennsylvania offers several courses ranked as the best in state by Golf Digest including Olde Stonewall Golf Club in Ellwood City ($150 - $100), Fox Chapel Golf Club in Pittsburgh ($150) and the Totteridge Golf Club in Greensburg.

If you have a thing for playing the best courses in the country with a lot of history thrown in, give Pennsylvania a try, your golf holiday would be unique and satisfying.
