    Picturesque Golf In Herefordshire

    by Sarah Webb

Mist in a valley, Herefordshire by Late Night MovieThe county of Herefordshire situated in the West Midlands of England is famous for its hilly landscape, scenic views and picturesque market towns. Bordering Wales it has a heritage filled with Cider production and cattle rearing that is renowned throughout the world. It is less known for its wonderful golf courses yet these are something that should be enjoyed by everyone. There is a common theme in the golf courses throughout Herefordshire; they are all jam-packed with striking views of the countryside, while providing enjoyable golfing tests for every level of player.

The Herefordshire Golf Course is just one example. This picturesque course follows 6036 yards of rural area with panoramic views of the Welsh mountains. It has been said that “If you find Gleneagles too expensive to visit, do the next best thing and treat yourself to a day at Herefordshire Golf Course,” which is definitely true. The course was established in 1932 and has since been molded into the memorable and enjoyable walk that it is today. Yet, it brings downhill slopes and tight fairways to challenge even the best golfers.

South Herefordshire Golf Course by RangeyeJust outside the market town of Kington, Kington Golf course situated on Bradnor Hill, nestling Wales is the highest golf course in England. Founded in 1925, it was later designed by the highly regarded golf Architect, Major Cecil Key Hutchinson and is seen as one of the finest natural links courses in the country. This is certainly no lie, on certain holes you can look out at the outstanding views over Herefordshire and Wales with the wind in your hair (or on your head for some?!) while holes like ‘The Gully’ can intimidate even the best of players. Whatever time of year you choose to visit, Kington also has a great reputation for the superb quality of their greens, even in the winter months it is a rarity for temporary greens to be needed.
Belmont Golf Course on the outskirts of Hereford has fantastic views over the 6511 yard, par 72 course. But it has plenty more to offer , it not only provides for your every golfing need but the River Wye also gives angling fanatics the chance to enjoy some peaceful back-to-nature fishing and Belmont Abbey brings some historic beauty to the fore. The Abbey founded in 1859, following the rule of St Benedict is at the centre of the local community and brings tranquility and beauty in its monastery gardens, which is a ‘must see’ visit.

Herefordshire Golf Course Hole No 6If you aren’t looking for a quiet time and want a real test then head to nearby Ross-on-Wye. Designed by leading architect Ken Cotton in the 1960’s the course is now advised by another outstanding architect, Donald Steel who has designed many famous courses including the redesign to the championship standard of the Jubilee course at St Andrews. Ross-on-Wye’s woodland golf course, known as the “little Wentworth”, is demanding and will require a degree of patience. Yet, the surrounding fields of farmland and wildlife that can be seen across the course are well worth the challenge. The idyllic setting and peacefulness around the course distracts you from the hustle and bustle of modern life and can help you forget about your daily stresses, so all you need to concentrate on is your game.

Whatever kind of break you want and wherever you decide to start your Herefordshire golfing experience it’s sure to be packed with spectacular views, countryside and history.
