2010 PGA Show — Hot New Products that warrant your attention and your wallet!

Simply put – it was a great show, one of the best in the past few years. Cautious optimism hovered in the air as the golf world descended on Orlando for the annual PGA merchandise show. As the event progressed, exhibitor feedback ranged between “Better than I expected”, to outright bullishness. Here are some hot new products for 2010.

Golf ProductsThe hottest item, aka “buzz” was Graphite Design’s Tour AD DI-7X shaft. For the past few months I have been playing this shaft, as have Brenden Pappas, Matt Kuchar, Robert Karlsson, Thongchai Jaidee and Tiger. Tiger used it in the Masters. Why, because it is 30 yards longer than most other available shafts and has a terrific ball flight and superb feel. What more do you need from a shaft? It works great both in drivers and hybrids.

The mid bend profile of the Tour AD DI allows the player to load the shaft properly, yet maintains a firm enough tip section through impact, producing optimal spin and launch conditions. Golfers using the shaft will experience the ball leaving the club head with a lot of speed, while maintaining exceptional feel and control.

The new Tour AD DI shaft is available in four models: The 50 gram Tour AD DI 5 (R2, R1, and S flexes); the 60 gram Tour AD DI 6 (SR, S, and X flexes); the 70 gram Tour AD DI 7 (S and X flexes); and the 80 gram Tour AD DI 8 (S and X flexes).

Tour Edge

Golf ProductsTour Edge Exotics owner and designer, David Glod, has introduced the Exotics Tour Proto Putter line which represents the epitome of craftsmanship. Every head is shaped and entirely CNC milled from a solid block of SUS303 stainless steel – the most responsive soft steel available. These putters deliver an exceptionally pure feel, critical to control and delicate touch. The face incorporates a multi-level X-grip face pattern, gently gripping the ball at impact, releasing it on a smooth initial roll and a true line to the cup. The hand-rolled leading edge ensures that each stroke glides smoothly through the ball, even from longer grass on the fringe. Proto V3 model is shown in the photo.

MSRP: $299.00

Tour Edge Bazooka HT Max Irons Tour Edge’s Bazooka HT Max irons are engineered to maximize performance. Each HT iron has a different blade length, face height, top line, offset, bounce and MOI that optimizes performance in distance, trajectory, spin and forgiveness. The long irons (3-5) feature a longer blade length, wider sole width and progressive undercut cavity for greater forgiveness. The mid irons (6-7) feature a mid-blade length, less offset, more bounce, thinner top line and a mid-sole width for greater workability. Finally, the scoring irons (8-PW) feature a smaller undercut cavity, least offset, most bounce and a narrower sole width for dead-on accuracy. The HT Max incorporates a progressive undercut cavity that lowers the center of gravity (CG) in the long irons for higher flying shots, and raises the CG in the scoring irons for more spin and greater feel and control.

Mizuno MX-58 Irons

Mizuno MP-58 Irons Revealed!Replacing the retired MP-57 series, Mizuno’s MX- 58 irons offer players of all levels increased benefits in the areas of feel, distance and forgiveness. With Mizuno’s revolutionary DUAL MUSCLE TITANIUM™ Technology which is employed during the complex Grain Flow Forging process - ingeniously joining an 11 gram titanium slug to a forged steel head sans welds. Mizuno’s MP-58 achieves perimeter stability while preserving the solid feel of a muscle-back. This high-tech Titanium metal is forged into the outer muscle of the iron, which provides forgiveness with greater MOI than traditional irons for improved performance on off-center shots – the best of both worlds.

These slick-looking irons are designed to provide the feel and playability of traditional Mizuno blades with added game-enhancing characteristics. The pleasing impact sound is the result of Mizuno’s “modal analysis” technology.

The Mizuno MP-58 irons conform to the 2010 groove regulations and are available in a double nickel mirror chrome finish.

Mizuno has also introduced their outstanding “Shaft Optimizer” Performance Fitting System which I heartedly recommend for all levels of golfers. This new cutting edge technology takes shaft fitting to a whole new level. Mizuno has created a “Swing DNA” which is a unique system that identifies the unique blueprint in every swing - Mizuno has addressed the most critical element of the entire custom fitting process. Visit their web site for a full explanation of this system.

TaylorMade

Though not present at the Show this year, their products were readily available at the shaft manufacturers’ booths at Demo Day.

Golf ProductsWeighing just 284 grams, TaylorMade’s Burner SuperFast driver is a speed demon, designed to deliver increased club head speed and superior distance. Its improved performance begins with a 460cc head shape that’s sleeker and more aerodynamic, boasting a high MOI for tremendous forgiveness. It also features a new bulge and roll design that’s optimized to maximize forgiveness on off-center hits. Critical to the driver’s performance is its Matrix Ozik XCon 4.8 shaft, which is both ultra-light and tip-soft, helping generate more ball speed, a higher launch angle and more spin to promote greater distance. At 46.5″ in length, Burner SuperFast automatically promotes a wide, fast swing arc.

Adams Golf

Talk to Tom Watson about his longevity and one of the reasons behind his success, according to Tom, are Adams Golf’s products.

Golf Products Adams Speedline Fast 10 Hybrid-Fairway Woods feature the playability of a hybrid and the distance of a fairway wood. By utilizing internal heel-toe weighting and advanced Boxer Technology, these forgiving clubs offer a higher MOI than conventional fairway woods. A lower center of gravity delivers a higher launch and better feel compared to standard fairway woods. The increased sole camber from heel to toe makes the Speedline Fast 10 Hybrid-Fairway Woods easy to hit from the fairway, as well as from a variety of other lies. The Speedline Fast 10 Hybrid-Fairway Woods are available in two models with two different weight pads. The standard model has the weight pad positioned back for neutral ball flight, and the draw model has the weight pad positioned in the heel for a draw biased ball flight, Standard and Draw and is available in three lofts (13°, 15°, 18°) with Aldila Wasabi or Matrix HD graphite shafts.

YES! GOLF

YES! Adds Two High MOI Putters to Lineup For 2010

YES! Golf has added three new putters to its lineup for 2010. The new C-Groove putters, Morgan and Mollie, feature multi-material head construction and the new Donna II putter features a plumber neck hosel.

The Morgan and Mollie are classic blade putter shapes that are enhanced by YES! Golf’s C-Grooves technology and multi-material head construction. The head combines a tungsten back with a stainless steel body and an aluminum face. The synergy of the light, aluminum face and extremely heavy back perimeter maximizes the moment of inertia, stabilizing the face at impact, resulting in more control and consistency. The putters will be available in right hand only for a suggested retail of $360.

Mollie Morgan

Donna II is an extension of the popular hybrid Donna putter. It has a plumber neck hosel as opposed to the offset double bend shaft in the Donna. Available in right and left hand, the suggested retail of Donna II is $300.

Callaway Golf

Callaway was the Show’s most popular booth this year, as they introduced many great products for the first time in a few years. Leading the way were their Callaway FT9 and FT-iZ drivers as well as their new Odyssey Backstryke putter.

Callaway’s FT Tour DriverGolf Products

This 440 cc driver features Callaway’s highly successful Fusion Technology, combining a carbon composite body with a titanium face cup which maximizes perimeter weighting for a high Moment of Inertia and incredible performance.

The driver’s External Web Weighting provides an optimal CG (Center of Gravity) for a long, penetrating ball flight. It also includes Hyperbolic Face Technology which creates higher ball speeds across the entire face and precision shaping that provides a larger sweet spot.

Additionally, better players prefer its deep face, its open face angle and full length hosel which produce great aesthetics and inspire confidence at address. Available in 8.5°, 9.5°, 10.5° with an Aldila Voodoo graphite shaft.

MSRP: $499.00

Callaway FT-iZ Fairway Wood

Callaway FT-iZ Fairway WoodThis is one of Callaway’s best fairway woods since the Big Bertha series and the new FT-iZ Fairway Woods only adds to the legacy. More importantly, it is a fun club to play with, as is Callaway’s FT-iZ Hybrid NP.

By employing Polar Weighting, Callaway has provided stability, consistency, incredible feel and increased speed (linear acceleration) in this wood. This was accomplished by utilizing a heavy face and heavy in-line power source in the rear of the club to localize weight at the front and back of the driver.

The wood’s aerodynamic body design significantly reduces drag in the downswing for higher impact speeds and increased distance.

Lofts of 13°, 15°, 18°, 21° and 24°

Callaway FT-iZ Tour Driver

Golf Products

This driver is constructed of cast titanium, compression-cured carbon fiber, formed aluminum, and cast steel, creating the optimal combination of performance and feel.

It features Polar Weighting, which results in stability, consistency, and increased linear acceleration of the ball for more distance through a heavier face and an in-line power source in the back of the head. Likewise, its aerodynamic body design uses a progressive shape to produce the most efficient high inertia clubhead ever produced by Callaway.

Consistently higher ball speeds are achieved through the chemically milled hyperbolic face cup which selectively removes unwanted material from the face for precision thickness control. The Tour model features a 1-degree open face angle for increased shot-shaping capability. Available in 8.5°, 9.5°, 10.5° with stock Aldila Voodoo shafts.

Odyssey Backstryke putter

Odyssey Backstryke Blade PuttersThe very popular and hugely successful Odyssey line of putters has made a habit of developing ‘big idea’ products that revolutionize the putting game… first there was insert technology… then came 2-Ball… now it’s time to welcome the Backstryke putter.

In designing Backstryke Putters, Odyssey engineers have moved the shaft backward, placing the axis of the shaft point as close as possible to the putter head’s centre of gravity. This in-line axis develops what Odyssey design experts call Stroke Balance – a fluid and stable stroke path, promoting better distance control, consistency and accuracy.

The Backstryke uses a Visible Face Alignment feature that allows golfers to clearly see if the face is square to the target line without the shaft impeding the line of sight. This will significantly benefit golfers who struggle with long putts and who also consistently position their existing putter away from the intended target line.

Odyssey’s Forward Press Stabilization Technology also allows for a hands-forward position without de-lofting the putter head, a common problem when using a forward-press putting style. This results in enhanced stabilization, a more upward stroke on the golf ball, and a truer roll, more often.

The unique design of the Backstryke gives a forward shaft lean that will help every golfer emulate a style adopted by the game’s greatest putters. This shaft position also aids a stable straight line with the leading arm, preventing wrist-break during the stroke. The loft for these putters is 4° - a la Dave Stockton.

The Backstryke is available is three head designs, 2-Ball, Blade and Marxman, and features a White Ice multi-layer insert that has been fine-tuned to enhance responsiveness and consistency. The face surface has also been roughened to enhance the sound at impact with softer golf balls.

The Backstryke is already the talk of both the PGA and Champions Tour, and is being used by Callaway Staff Professionals, including England’s Oliver Wilson , Thomas Bjorn of Denmark and Eduardo Romero of Argentina.

Miura CB-501 Forged Cavity Back Irons

Like the famous Lamborghini Miura, known for its outstanding expert craftsmanship, Miura golf clubs are of the same ilk – masterful, precise, functional and rather expensive, but worth every penny.

MIURA GOLF INTRODUCES CB-501 FORGED CAVITY-BACK IRONSWhen one buys a Lamborghini, custom fitting and driver education are available for each owner. Similarly, custom fitting is a necessity for Miura – no off the shelf clubs available. Miura irons, named after their Japanese owner, Katsuhiro Miura, are acknowledged as the purest and the best of forged clubs manufactured anywhere in the world. Mr. Miura’s goal was to create an iron that featured the ideal ball flight; enough offset to promote playability, the perfect head size and a sole grind that would accommodate a broad range of players.

Miura’s forging techniques rearrange the molecular structure of the mild steel in a pattern that is uniform throughout the club head. This eliminates void spots in the club face. This process assures that every Miura club in your bag has the distance control, ball flight, spin, and feel that any golfer could demand.

This tightness in the grain structure of the metal is what gives Miura made clubs the controlled, soft feel that other manufacturers cannot achieve. Miura also uses a proprietary “spin welding” process to produce the industries’ most consistent hosel. This unique procedure ensures that the bore depths and hosel heights are identical on every Miura made head and the shaft of every club will be perfectly centered.

The CB-501, which boasts a W nickel (satin) chrome finish, is available in a 3-iron through pitching wedge set, right-hand only. The CB-501 - a cavity-back iron featuring a small muscle-back located behind the sweet spot delivers the trajectory of a blade iron when the ball is struck on the center of the face. This style of iron also offers cavity-back forgiveness and ball flight, as the contact point moves away from the center of the face.

Besides the new CB-501, Miura Golf’s current product line also includes the Tournament Blade; MC-102 (Mid-Size Cavity Model); CB-202 (Cavity Back Model): CB-301 (Cavity Back Model); Wedges (Wedge Series and Black Wedge Series, each available in six lofts); Series 1957 Small Blade Irons; Y and C Grind Wedges; Blade and Classic putters (two models); Precious Edition Driver, Fairway Wood and Utility Wood.

Playing these clubs is not like any other experience one receives from using brand name irons. This is where you will experience what the feel of the perfect golf shot is all about!

Miura Golf’s corporate office is located in Vancouver, British Columbia and Miura Golf clubs are sold at the finest custom-fitting shops in North America. In order to purchase a set of Miura irons, visit www.miuragolf.com to locate a designated and approved custom club fitter.

Golf ProductsSeeMore Putters

Once again this Franklin, Tennessee based company has introduced a truly useful putter that simply makes sense and definitely lowers your putts per round. New for 2010 is their DB4 CS Gunmetal putter with RST2 Technology.

The DB4 is the most exciting new product launch from SeeMore in many years, as it offers a very simple, effective, and innovative twist on a classic design. RST2 alignment technology expands the proprietary alignment benefits of SeeMore’s patented RifleScope Technology (RST) to a classic blade design with offset hosel for the first time.

Golf ProductsThe RST2 alignment system is housed on the top of the hosel vs. the original RST system that is found on the top heel section of the putter. The 2 white lines on top of the hosel are milled perfectly parallel to the face of the putter, creating a perfect “gun sight” effect where the golfer is assured of being square to the intended target line when the white lines are visible and the signature red dot is hidden.

The RST2 system also assures that the loft of the putter head will be optimal for perfect roll on every putt.

The golfer also can be confident that by lining up the 2 white lines, and making sure the red is not visible, that his eyes and shoulders and hips will all be square to the intended target line. This means that the golfer will enjoy a much greater probability of making a consistently perfect stroke with each and every putt, leading to more made putts and lower scores due to improved putting. The RST2 brings most of the key benefits of SeeMore’s patented and proven RST (RifleScope) technology to the large golfing population who love the classic looks of this type of putter.

The DB4 is 100% milled in the USA, and is available in carbon steel with a proprietary multi-layer black satin finish for striking and lasting beauty.

Holiday Gift Guide 2009

Holiday Gift Guide 2009

By: Dr. Barry Lotz

Looking for the newest, coolest off-course and on-course golf gifts, whether it is for your own holiday list or for someone else?  Well, it’s that time of year again for gift giving and most golfers are just looking for an excuse to find the new products that will give them an extra edge.
We have selected some of the newest and best performing products to that end that not only will help your golf game, but are great gifts.

TaylorMade R9 Irons (Graphite Shaft)
OMG! - The best that TaylorMade has produced in many a year. These are the easiest to hit clubs that have the most amazing “buttery feel” AND you can expect an average 12-15 yards extra distance.

TaylorMade is back at it with its inverted cone tech which we all know is marketed to expand the sweet spot and reduce distance loss at the time of an off center hit.
The stylish design also features a sole that makes it very versatile from just about any lie. And these irons will elicit compliments from your playing partners. Mine were impressed with my new found accuracy and distance with these irons. (The Penta TP ball also made the difference).

The R9 irons were designed for the mid to low handicap golfer who enjoys extra forgiveness in their iron set. The set itself, which is almost made of 2 different designs, gives the golfer a long iron advantage with a hollow undercut and a high rebound face, while the 6 thru gap wedge become more compact and solid without as much of the underR9 Ironscut forgiveness.
The R9 TP irons incorporate a new groove design that conforms to the USGA and R&A ruling that goes into effect in 2010 for high-level competition.
KBS Steel Shafts
R9 irons come equipped with KBS 90-gram steel shafts, available in S and R flexes. KBS, which is quickly growing in popularity on the PGA Tour, incorporates several new enhancements into their steel shafts to promote improved performance.
One is that the wall thickness of each shaft increases proportionately as the shaft diameter decreases, which promotes added stability. The KBS steel shafts in the R9 irons are a lighter version of their popular tour shaft to promote greater swing speed, higher launch and increased distance. In addition, the KBS shafts in the R9 irons share a structure and step pattern with the tour shaft that promotes tighter dispersion for greater consistency and control.
The R9 iron is also available in one graphite shaft model, the Fujikura Motore, in 75-grams in S flex, 65-grams in R flex and 55-grams in M flex.

Titleist AP1 Irons
According to Titleist, its AP1 irons are ‘advanced performance, multi-material, dual cavity irons providing improved feel, great looks, shot control and higher flight with forgiveness for the avid to skilled golfer.’
Titleist golf ironsBasically speaking, even golfers with normally low self-esteem can suddenly use these clubs.
The AP1is not as intimidating to the mid-handicapper as previous Titleist irons, which were generally perceived by many golfers as being out of their  league compared to the clubs labeled ‘user-friendly game improvement’.
The irons at address, have a “chunkier” than normal look but also offer an excellent feel, courtesy of the soft elastomer in the back cavity, thereby reducing vibration.
They also have a lively ball flight, a result of their thin face and dual cavity design which pushes weight to the perimeter. You need to take these out for a test drive, you will be pleasantly surprised and may become a Titleist convert finally.

MSRP   $100 per club/steel, and $125 per club/graphite.

Updates in the Studio Select line  and the new Scotty Cameron quartet of putters

http://www.golfmagic.com/news/images/corona.jpg

From the left, the new Scotty Cameron Sonoma, Del Mar and Corona putters with ‘honey dip’ finish

From the premier designer of putters and with endorsements and results to solidify Scotty’s esteemed status in the industry, the technology Cameron introduced with the original Studio Select putters, has now been incorporated into the new California line in order to accommodate a wider range of choice in terms of length, weight and putting strokes.

The California line series is precision milled from soft 303 stainless- steel, and includes the Coronado, Monterey, Sonoma and Del Mar, identified by blade and mallet-style heads and two different neck styles.

The California line is distinguished by a unique “Honey Dipped” finish.  The natural bronze finish is actually not “dipped” or plated, rather it comes from a heat-treated process that is part of the head manufacturing process.  The result is a rich bronzed appearance that looks great in natural light, while reducing glare and instilling confidence at the very least.
“I’m excited by the feedback I’ve had about the California putters,” says Scotty. “Players who prefer the more flowing, less geometric lines of the Coronado or the Del Mar are now going to find that they don’t have to sacrifice performance. Players can get a perfect fit for their stroke as well as their eye.”
Scotty has also updated the 2009 Studio Select line for Titleist with the Newport 2.5, Squareback 2 and Fastback 1.5 models, replacing the current Newport 1.5, Newport 2.7 and Fastback 1.
All four California models are fit with a stepless steel shaft for a clean, unbroken playing position appearance, a black Cameron Tour grip with dancing logo, an Art-of-Putting shaft band and a new paint drip Art-of-Putting head cover.
The new Cameron California and Studio Select putters will be available in December, with a suggested retail price of $325 ($350 for H weight customization).

TaylorMade’s new Penta TP Ball
golf ballsTaylorMade’s new Penta TP golf ball is soon to be released to the public in December in the Sunbelt only and nationwide in March. Rave reviews from Sergio Garcia, Retief Goosen, Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson and Sean O’Hair have caused a buzz amongst consumers anticipating the release of golf’s first 5-layer ball.
Without all the fancy rigmarole and company hyperbole, this is probably the best ball I have ever used.
Its performance as to distance, feel and around the greens is simply awesome! It holds its line, and I have increased my distance by 13 yards AND it is extremely durable. What more can you expect from a ball?
The five-piece ball (Pente means five in the Greek language) has been three years in development in anticipation of the new groove rules introduced for Tour players from January 1 and for elite players by 2014.
According to TaylorMade, the aim is for the ball to improve performance in drivers, long-irons, mid-irons, short-irons and pitching with wedges. It really over delivers especially around the greens!
The cover of the Penta TP is made of a soft urethane material to promote a high-spin rate, but lower trajectory on wedge shots and pitches for more control. The outer of the three mantle layers – most easily compressed - is designed to create optimal spin and flight conditions when ball speeds are below 120 mph, equivalent to a pro’s short irons.
The middle mantle layer is reputedly designed to compress on shots with a ball speed between 120 and 140 mph (mid-irons), while the inner mantle creates high-launching, low-spin shots with long-iron ball speeds (140 to 160 mph).
According to TaylorMade, only the fastest swingers will activate the low-compression core, but those who can, should expect higher ball speed and less spin on their tee shots.
MSRP    $52.00 per dozen

Bettinardi Golf
Bobby Bettinardi, the putter designing and manufacturing genius, has also introduced the ultimate in a belt buckle, now quite the “in” accessory on the Tour. The Buckle is an extension of their superior metal craft from the function of golf putters to the fashion world of golf. You’ll find The Buckle being worn by Rory Sabbatini, Lee Westwood and Darren Clarke.

The Buckle begins as a solid block of high-grade, double-aged stainless steel (DASS) and passes through a series of 12 processes before it can be a Bettinardi Buckle.

CNC milling gradually cuts the metal, creating the form of The Buckle. It is then further honed, engraved, buffed, polished, and hand-painted with an enamel finish.

The Buckle is available in two sizes: Standard (1-¼”) & Large (1-½”). And, like its putter counterpart, can be customized to your taste and specifications, including 3-letter initialing, design engraving, and hand-painted elements.

Buckle Size ComparisonAll Bettinardi Buckles come with Herman Oak Bridle Leather Belts. These high quality belts are dressed and finished with oils and tallows to make them strong and flexible to prevent cracking around punch holes, and tanned, so as not to tarnish the hardware.
Yet, these leathers also maintain their body in use and have very little stretch. All finishes are fully aniline for a natural look, just like stained wood.

Belts are available in black, brown, white, blue, green, orange, red, and turquoise.

Graphite Design Shafts GDS Tour AD Shafts
We all know that the shaft is the engine in any club. The very best shafts that I have ever tested and what I use in my clubs are the Graphite Design Tour AD – UT shafts.

This is the shaft, that in my opinion, every golfer who is not on Tour should be using, even though Tour players such as Kenny Perry and a host of Champion Tour players are themselves playing the GDS Tour AD models.
GDS has just introduced their new GDS Tour AD D-1 7X this past week and the response on the PGA and Nationwide Tour has been amazing. Players drove the ball 20 – 30 yards further with perfect trajectories.
Both the UT and D-1 models are special orders, and now I understand why they are “special”. They are phenomenal and have, according to my playing partners, improved my driving ability both with the driver and hybrids.
Both of these shafts are very expensive, but you get what you pay for - longer distance and a big smile on your face - $385 per shaft.

Miura Hybrid
ImageLooking for a great hybrid? Famed Katsuhiro Miura has created an extremely well designed Tour Quality Hybrid which uses a carbon plate on the crown to create a low center of gravity in the head. The club sits square at set up and the solid sound and feel of the club instills confidence in the golfer and allows him/her to take dead aim at the green.
The mid/high trajectory with mid/low spin and a slight draw bias virtually guarantees performance.

The Miura Hybrids come in 17, 20 and 23 degrees. The head cc sizes are not overly large, but are certainly big enough to be easy to hit.

Price: $239.00 with standard Nippon NSPro 950 steel shaft, with other shaft options available at different price points.

The Latest in Teaching and Training Aids

The Good, the Bad, and the Very Ugly.

Recently I received a spate of the supposedly latest and greatest training aids that guaranteed miraculous overnight solutions to improve my swing and short game.

Well, as you can imagine, training aids are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get inside. Thanks Forrest for a great truth.

We tested all these products at the Rancho La Quinta Country Club using their staff PGA teaching pros headed by Shaun Shearer as well as our usual group of testers and those of the PGTAA (www.pgtaa.com).
A caveat:  Whichever training or teaching aid you decide on to rectify that part of your game that is lacking, you must use it regularly to obtain the benefits!
When it comes to golf teaching and training aids there is positively no shortage from which to pick from. There are teaching and training aids available for every facet of your golf game. From having a proper stance to sinking the last putt, there is something available to help anyone. The best advice here is to not get confused.
You must decide on a golf training aid that can help cure a particular problem area of your golf.

The Sonic Golf S1 Audio Biofeedback System

Consistent rhythm and tempo plus, balance, are the gel that keeps the swing moving freely and repetitively. The key to great golf is to find your own ideal rhythm and tempo and then maintain it.

System-1 Solo EditionSonic golf enables golfers of all abilities to capture this most elusive aspect of the golf swing. With the Sonic Golf System-1, for the first time, you can literally hear the rhythm, tempo and timing of your swing in real-time, as you swing, and tune in to the most fundamental success factors of the golf swing.

The Sonic System-1 is simple, straightforward, and amazingly effective. Hear “casting from the top”. Hear jerky transitions from backswing to downswing. Hear the release of the clubhead before, at, or after the ball, and hear the sweet sound of a smooth, fluid, rhythmic golf swing - in real-time, every time.

The Sonic Golf System-1 technology is inserted inside the shaft of your club fitted with Sonic Golf’s custom Golf Pride grip. The swing motion is transmitted wirelessly to a belt-worn receiver, which converts your swing motion to continuous musical tones you hear on the headset unit. Slow swings are low pitch and quiet tones. Swinging faster and the pitch and volume gets higher.
Instead of focusing on the mechanics, such as starting on your downswing by shifting weight to your left foot, you can now exclusively use the audio feedback to regulate your swing. As a result, you will focus more on the swing itself and forget everything else.
$399.00 for the Solo model (shown above) and $499.00 for the Pro version

AccuPutt Putting Trainer

This is an excellent aid that can be used from home.  The best feature is the ability to see the line throughout the stroke, which enables one to see if the ball is pushed or pulled.  If one is able to understand why the putt is off line then the stroke can be corrected.  The device definitely can build a memory that can be repeated and will create a more consistent stroke if used regularly.

teaching-aidsAccuPutt uses a type-1 laser to shoot an invisible line down the center of the practice green - the opening on the special patent-pending putter must travel perfectly straight to avoid breaking that line. A green LED on the base unit shows when the laser line is unbroken, but if the putter strays at all from the perfect stroke, a red light is activated instead - giving the user critical instant feedback while they practice their stroke.

The aperture in the putter is even adjustable so that as a user’s putting improves, they can continue to challenge themselves until their putting is pure, consistent, and deadly accurate.

The only negative is the putter used is not the putter one uses on a daily basis.

The SensoGlove for correct grip pressure – how to avoid the “Death Grip”

teaching-aidsPracticing with the SensoGlove will teach you the correct grip pressure for a smooth, consistent swing that delivers greater distance, enhanced precision and lower scores. It has adjustable pressure settings that allow the user to select a grip that works for them and stores this information. It also measures each finger’s pressure. A lighter grip improves distance and accuracy with every club, including chipping and putting.

SensoGlove’s built-in digital computer actively monitors your grip with sensors placed strategically throughout the glove, providing instant feedback at all the points of your swing. SensoGlove’s audio feedback warns you at the moment your grip becomes too tight, allowing you to learn and maintain correct grip pressure at every point of your swing.

The lightweight digital computer can be removed and replaced without removing the glove, so you can use it only when you need it.

The gloves are exceptionally durable and are available in men’s and ladies sizes S-XL for $89.00. If the glove wears out, keep the computer and simply reorder another glove for $25.00.

ProStance

teaching-aidsAs per ProStance devotee, Padraig Harrington, “The ProStance is a great tool for any golfer at any level. It helps build balance and stability for every part of the game from putting and chipping to the full swing”.

This device works well for advanced players working on their balance and weight shift.  I noticed that for players who do not have good balance at all, had difficulty making a swing.  As per Shaun Sheareer, “I believe that the Pro Stance is great for average and advanced players and will recommend it to my advanced players”.  Unfortunately you have to have a teacher there to watch for if you are unbalanced an amateur golfer, they themselves, will not know how to fix the balance problem.  “I found the Pro Stance to be helpful with players who tend to have their head ahead of the ball at impact and this teaches the feeling and balance necessary in the swing to keep the head back and then complete the weight shift on the follow through.”

KC Putting Device - A Putters Dream

teaching-aidsMore like a putter’s nightmare.  This device looks great in the case and then you open it up and see all of the cheap plastic parts you have to put together and then have to read the manual to put it on the putter.

The idea of the device is great and you are able to see the path of your stroke and see where the ball is positioned.  The device also enables you to see what line the ball starts on and if it is consistent with your stroke.  Not recommended.

True Ympact Swing Trainer

TRUE YMPACT SWING TRAINERThe True Ympact is excellent for players with casting problems and for players who would like to feel their hands in front of the club.

The device does not let you release the club early.  It is difficult to hit shots with the device on, but once you remove the True Ympact your swing will feel great. You can tell instantly that the True Ympact had started to build a different memory into the swing and the shots were more solid and a more consistent ball flight was evident.

Our testers and PGTAA (www.pgtaa.com) teachers and students who tried this saw an increase in distance after hitting about 50-60 balls.  I will use this with my students and recommend it for a training aide for them to purchase.

The Perfect Link

The Perfect Link is the best putting aid out of the group as it keeps your left arm in perfect position throughout the stroke.  The device keeps your forearms close together on both the back stroke and forward stroke.

teaching-aids A bonus feature is that the Perfect Link will also help your chipping technique.

It is ready to use right out of the box and can be used not only on the practice putting green, but in the comfort of your home as well.

Our testers found that by using The Perfect Link to warm up before each round, it has ingrained a memory in their putting strokes that they I can take and feel out on the course as well. At the PGTAA (www.pgtaa.com) we have had multiple students and teachers try the device and they all saw improvements in their stroke.  It especially helps with a more consistent stroke on shorter putts.

TruePlane Putting Trainer

teaching-aidsTrueplane is used by more than 250 tour pros and these players have more than 200 wins on the main tours including 11 Majors since getting Trueplane. One of Trueplane’s biggest endorser is Masters Champ Trevor Immelman.

Trueplane has been used on tour since 2001. I believe that an inside-to-inside stroke is best because it is just as simple as a straight stroke and is easier to achieve and more natural. On many occasions many of our testers who said they preferred a straight stroke tried Trueplane and found that it felt great.

To use the Trueplane, you simply slide the putter along the guide following the red line for the perfect stroke. The Trueplane includes a guide rod for perfect putter alignment as well as a smart looking carry bag.

Bridgestone Golf Balls

We used Bridgestone’s B330, B330 RX and Treo balls. All our testers raved about the feel of all three of these balls especially the Treo. While doing our wedge testing as well, the RX received the highest ranking from our better players, while the Treo was the favorite of the higher handicappers.
Tour B330-RXThis multilayer urethane ball features a very soft gradational compression core with Tour-level spin, feel and control around the greens, but optimized for moderate swing speeds (85 to 105 mph) off the tee.
The B330-RX utilizes the same industry leading Seamless Cover Technology that Bridgestone balls have become known for, and features a 330-dimple pattern for optimal trajectory and consistency of ball flight.
It definitely is a ball that offers both distance and exceptional feel around the greens.

These New Putters are Designed to Lower Your Scores

With our current economy, it is now more important than ever to spend your dollars wisely. Before you go out and buy the “latest and greatest”, consult a golf professional who is a skilled teacher and knowledgeable fitter. You will get the best advice in matching up the proper technique with the correct equipment specifications so that you get real results from the dollars you spend.

More than 9 out of 10 players do NOT aim where they think they’re aiming and most are off by enough to miss even short putts.

Why are most players off with their aim? There is a built in skew or parallax in human vision caused by standing “side on” to the target as required by the rules of golf. Even with abundant practice with emphasis on perfect mechanics most players will never reach the next level of performance. That type of practice will not make up for the built in human visual inadequacies associated with a side on view of the target. In other words honing a great stroke is just a waste of time if you’re not aiming at the target.

There is somewhat of a push-pull effect taking place in putter design today. It appears that size does matter and MOI (moment of inertia), weight (head or shaft or both) and alignment are the buzz words. What is and continues to be prevalent in putters are unconventional designs such as the Balero, the use of weighting and inserts.

The latest designs contain all three –MOI, weighting and alignment.
As alluded to above, critical to great putting is proper alignment and aim.  It’s a challenge for players to precisely align to their target. Many of the putters reviewed below have great alignment features making it easier for players to improve their alignment and aim, thereby allowing them to make more confident strokes.

More putters include adjustable weights which can be changed, depending on factors such as green speed. The weights are also designed to match swing weight precisely with different shaft lengths and to affect the toe-hang of the putter (how the putter rotates open and closed during the stroke).

 TaylorMade Balero Putter

balero_1Following TMAG’s great success with their Spider and Itsy Bitsy Spider putter line, now comes the latest iteration of the series – the Balero. Featuring both a new visual direction and an improved alignment system—wings that echo the diameter of the cup, and a flange with a ball-sized cutout.

The Balero also uses a slightly modified AGSI+ grooved face insert as well as a high MOI design similar to the original Rossa Spider. It appears that TaylorMade potentially has another hit on its hands, as the new alignment system clearly is an improvement over the original Spider.

Though release date and pricing are not set, you can assume that the Balero will be sold for a similar price to that of the Spider.

Also new from Titleist –the Scotty Cameron Studio Select Kombi putter, a high performance line of mallet putters.

Kombi_sole

The Studio Select Kombi line is available in standard, mid and long length models – Kombi (33”, 34”, 35”), Kombi Mid (43”) and Kombi Long (50”).  Each Kombi is precision milled from lightweight 6061 Aircraft Aluminum and features Studio Select weighting technology.  Kombi putters incorporate a thick face and three-point weighting, that is, weights in the heel, toe and back.  The result is unmatched solid feel and sound in a mallet putter.  The combination of the three-point weighting technology and a deep CG produce a balanced putter that is stable throughout the stroke for forgiveness and great roll.

The putter is aesthetically pleasing, has a great set-up, and the ball comes off the face with an exceptionally good feel.

The Standard Kombi putter comes with circular weights in the heel and toe that allow for a variety of length and weight combinations to fit any putting stroke or style.  This flexibility makes it easy for golfers to choose a Kombi putter with the length and weight they require.  On the Kombi Mid and Long putters, the rear circular weight is replaced with a central bar weight to create the optimum head weight and balance for the longer lengths.

All Kombi putters feature a clean, double-bend stepless shaft with a full shaft of offset that provides an unobstructed look at address, while T-shaped, red ink sight lines provide precise alignment references on the topline and body.  A misted topline with a sight line along the rear edge reduces visual thickness and makes face alignment easy.  The Kombi offers a player-preferred shape and body size that flows into the ground from topline to rear.

Merlin Putter

The inventor of this truly useful putter, Pat Simmons, is also the inventor of the famous Alien Wedge and Tiger Shark utility wood. His designs are unique and more importantly, they work!

I am sure, that like many golfers, you cannot figure out why, when you aim right of the cup, it goes left or even further right. This putter works wonders for your alignment and aim.

The Merlin is probably the best putter available today to handle a golfer’s parallax issue. The Merlin allows you to correct for this visual inadequacy and aim the putter consistently without having tgolfo change your perception of where the target is located.

The Merlin has a heavy black center line that is perpendicular to the face, as do most putters. (When using a perpendicular line 9 out of 10 players did not line up where they thought they were aiming).

The 4 lines on either side of the centerline are angled away from the centerline at 2 degree increments. By using one of the smaller lines to aim the face you can correct for your individual parallax and aim the face at the target every time.

Available in 34”, 35” & 36” in both left and right hand models.

SeeMore SB1 Mallet

golfThe strikingly beautiful new SB1 mallet has been designed to offer an improved game option to the player looking at the new generation of large, face balanced, and high MOI mallets with general alignment features from front to back, such as the 2-Ball category of putters. It is the perfect combination of form and function and has created quite a buzz on tour.

The SB1 offers all the benefits of these large oversize mallets with the added precision alignment benefits of SeeMore RifleScope Technology (RST).  Tour devotees of the SeeMore brand include Zach Johnson, Briny Baird, Vaughan Taylor and of course, the late Payne Stewart.

The body of the SB1 putter is 100% CNC milled from aircraft grade 6061 aluminum. It is anodized with a black satin finish to provide a perfect contrast with the RST and with the white alignment line from front to back.

The shaft is bored-in to the head very near center, which results in the SB1 being face balanced. It is SeeMore’s only face balanced mallet.

Each SB1 putter also incorporates a milled internal hosel, providing an extra internal connection between the shaft and head, which enhances feel and allows the putter to be lie-adjusted later on should the player wish to modify this important specification.

Rife’s Barbados Tour Mallet

Rife continues their ever increasing putter market share in large part thanks to its tour success in the bags of players like Justin Rose, Andres Romero and JB Holmes. The Barbados has been one of the company’s most popular models. golf

This year the Barbados has undergone a facelift and then some. This CNC milled 304 stainless steel putter will have the Rife Tour Black finish. Then polishing the grooves and sole will be done to give it a two toned look on the face.

Alignment, set up and feel make the Barbados an excellent putter that performs admirably. Its patented feature and USP (Unique Selling Proposition) is its RollGroove Technology

(only available on RIFE putters), launches the ball into the air with a slight forward rotation instead of backspin. This eliminates the skipping and skidding created by traditional putters, creating a more consistent and accurate roll on every stroke.

The Barbados, whose head weight is 345 grams, comes with a Winn custom AVS grip, an extruded tube stepless steel shaft, and a head cover with magnetic clasps.

Coutour Golf’s “Arrow”

The Arrow Putter, created by Todd Sones, one of the better putting coaches and leading proponents of custom putter fitting, is precision CNC milled from one piece of high grade 6016 aluminum.  The weights in the toe, heel and tail are carbide, while the face insert is aerospace titanium.

The positioning of the carbide weights in the toe, heel and tail give the Arrow an incredibly high MOI rating, while the titanium face gives the impact a firm, yet soft feel.

golfgolf

The use of an “arrow” as a top line makes it very simple for both a player to align precisely and also allows a teacher to see that alignment. Plumber neck, gooseneck and mallet style putters are available.

The putter has a great feel to it and the alignment feature works well, especially for set-up to the ball.

The Talon Tour Series (TS) are the World’s first 4 speed putters offering 4-patented Kevflex polymer inserts for custom feel and speed control.  Now the user is able to dial in their feel and speed control based on playing conditions or personal preference.  The 4 inserts are color coded indicating the hardness and speed of the insert.

MSRP:  $249.95 and is available in either heel or center shaft.
