An efficient backswing – FEEL it

Would you like to hit the golf ball further? Yes! After all, it’s as much about ego as it is about need. Whether it be the little old lady valiantly driving the ball 150 yards on the long, cruel course, or a senior golfer who only took up the sport at age 60 or a long-drive champion who’d like to win at ’Vegas or THE Tiger Woods – everyone wants to hit the ball further. Now, anyone can.

Of course it is said that Tiger has controlled his distance as he’s matured, in order to strive for more accuracy. What, however, if he could have them both – the supreme long, soaring drive, and dead-centre-of-fairway accuracy?

The method described here is so simple you’ll wonder why no-one thought of it before. It is not based on some subjective, mystical formula, but rather, on science. On the laws of mechanics which govern how the golf club can best propel the ball, and on biomechanics which determines which movements are easiest for the human body to make, in order to conform with the required mechanics.

The main factor which determines how far the ball travels after it leaves the clubface is clubhead speed. The faster the clubhead is travelling at impact, the more speed it can impart to the ball. This speed, in turn, is created by an efficient use of the body’s largest muscles – the larger they are, the more power and speed they can generate to impart to the club.

How can a golfer then best harness her or his biggest muscles – the hips and trunk – to produce consistently better distance. By creating weight-shift. Almost a case of putting the body’s weight behind the ball in the backswing, and then into the ball in the downswing. This series of articles explains the simplest and most effective method to create weight shift, and thus instantly better carry distance.

A simple drill to experience pure weight-shift
(Apologies to all southpaws, please read left for right).
      • Set-up in your normal address posture.
      • Take your left hand off the club. Remain in posture, and move your right arm, and with it, the club, sideways, upto shoulder high, without rotating the body
      • Now attach your right arm at it’s usual place on the club’s grip.
      • Voila, you will feel all your weight in your right foot, and, you will also note that your shoulders have ‘turned’ by 90º.
