Bandon Oregon Dateline: 2010

Why 2010? Simple, really. That’s when Old MacDonald opens for play. I’ve never been a fan of simpleton course names, so the Brookwoods, Brookfields, and Tall Grass of the world leave me numb. Old MacDonald is the homage piece of Bandon Dunes golf resort to Charles Blair MacDonald, architect and caretaker of The National Golf Links on Long Island, NY, USA.

You’ve read a funny opening to a golf piece, but Bandon, Oregon is a funny place to find golf. It’s not located near anywhere metropolitan and couldn’t care less. Bandon is a wild place, accustomed to the occasional devastating fire. The town has burned to the ground twice, and the original course at the golf resort nearly made it a trifecta. During the construction of the second course at Bandon Dunes, a wildfire raged out of control, burning to the edge of ditches dug to protect the initial layout. The ditches held and the fire abated, but what a scare. It is stories of this ilk, beyond anecdotes, that truly season the recipe that is Bandon. Knowing that you might only get there once in a lifetime, I encourage you to wait for 2010. (more…)

Courses
The first course at the resort, Bandon Dunes, opened on May 19, 1999. Bandon Dunes was designed by Scotsman David McLay Kidd, and it instantly garnered high praise. The course features gorse-lined fairways and numerous pot bunkers.

The resort’s second course, Pacific Dunes, opened on July 1, 2001. Pacific Dunes was designed by Michigan architect Tom Doak, and sculpted by his design firm, Renaissance Design, Inc. Pacific Dunes also opened to glowing reviews and quickly surpassed Bandon Dunes as the highest-rated course on the property. Pacific Dunes was rated the number one resort golf course in the country in 2005 by Golfweek magazine, placing just ahead of Pebble Beach. (more…)

Other than political upheavals, BigFoot, agriculture and the weather, Oregon is famous mostly for its beautiful landscapes. Tourists line up Highway 101
to The Beaver state for a sunny vacation in spring and summers enjoying the breathtaking sights of the sea, visiting the lighthouses along the coast, wandering around the buzzing markets, and visiting the aquariums, caves and dunes. Ever heard of a golf vacation to Oregon?

Till the spring of 1999 you probably didnt but then David McKlay Kidd and Tom Doak presented the Bandon Dunes Resort to the golfing world and everything changed. Oregon was no longer just the coastline and lighthouses and the aquariums and golf holiday makers became the new breed of tourists flocking the beautiful state.

The two courses at Bandon Dunes Resort play on a golfers instinct to match wits with himself, to do outdo his last score and the urge to not repent never having included two of the worlds hardiest tracks in his golf package. Even though today Oregon boasts of some of the best and the most captivating golf courses in the country, playing Bandon Dunes is intoxicating.

Start off your Oregon golf tour with the Tom Doak designed Pacific Dunes course at Bandon for $250 a player. Why you would burn that hole in your pocket? Because youd get to play 6,557 yards of this links style layout on tight, undulating greens requiring tremendous skills and battle high bluffs and ever-present dunes on most of the 18-holes. The neighboring Bandon Dunes is an equal pleasure to play and costs you the same. This 18-hole David McKlay Kidd designed links course utilizes every bane and boon showered by nature on the grounds and makes any golf vacation a thing to talk about for ages.

Oregon has a lot more to offer than Bandon and a satisfying golf holiday must include the Robert Trent Jones designed Woodlands Course at Sunriver ($125) and the Witch Hollow Courses at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club ($70). Another very affordable Robert Trent Jones design to include in your golf package is the Eagle Point Golf Course ($83) in Southern Oregon ranked as one of the €˜Best Places to Play by Golf Digest. Located in the Rogue Valley, Eagle Point has a spectacular layout that uses every natural element available and is an interesting track to play.

Oregon also offers a lot of budget friendly courses that would be great on your golf tour. Try the Salishan Golf Links at Gleneden Beach ($99), Arnold Palmer designed Running Y Ranch Resort in Klamath Falls ($80) and The Reserve Vineyards & Golf Course in Aloha ($92).

Oregon golf travel is going to take you far and wide and surprise you with stunning courses when you least expect them. Case in point is the Eugene Country Club in Eugene which opened 18-holes to the public in 1925 and stands strong till today with a comfortable place on Golf Digests Top 100 courses rankings. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, the track runs 6,847 yards and plays a par 72.

It is laid out on a hilly terrain where wide greens and substantial fairways lock horns with strategically placed sand bunkers to produce a satisfying round of golf. Expect water hazards on at least four holes and a green fee of $125 per person but do include it in your golf package for the experience is unparalleled.

Grace DeMoss Zwahlen (b. abt 1930 in Corvallis, Oregon) is a former competitive women’s American amateur golfer from Oregon. One of the most successful female golfers from the Pacific Northwest, she was the first Pacific Northwesterner to be named to the prestigious United States Curtis Cup team in 1952 and 1954. After retiring from competitive golf, Zwahlen was named to numerous golf halls of fame and is now a high school golf coach.

Early life and career
DeMoss was born in Corvallis, Oregon, one of five daughters of Ray DeMoss, a Corvallis funeral director. She started playing golf as a teenager at the Corvallis Country Club, though she was initially more interested in equestrian sports.

She entered her first tournament, the Portland Open, in 1945 and came in last place. In her next major tournament a year later, the Pacific Northwest Golf Association Amateur, she made the semifinals, and then a year after that, lost in the finals. Her first tournament victory came in the 1947 Portland City Amateur.

Golf success
After her win in Portland, she entered tournaments across North America, primarily on the west coast. In 1949, she won her first major tournament, the Canadian Women’s Amateur Golf Championship. Following that win, she played throughout the winter in California to keep her game sharp. In 1950, she won the Pacific Northwest Amateur Championship played at Capilano Golf and Country Club in West Vancouver, British Columbia. She followed this victory with a semifinalist finish at the United States Women’s Amateur, and was a finalist at the Canadian Women’s Amateur, the Women’s Trans-Mississippi, and the Oregon Women’s Amateur, and was a medalist at the Women’s Western Open.

In 1952, she was named to the United States’ Curtis Cup team, the first golfer from the Northwest to receive the honor. However, that year, the American team lost the cup for the first time since its inception. DeMoss was able to reclaim the cup two years later when she was also named to the 1954 team.

Following her early success, she relocated to Florida to play golf year round where she won Florida state women’s amateur championships in 1955, 1957, and 1958. She returned to the Northwest to claim three straight Oregon women’s amateur titles from 1956 to 1958.

She continued to play competitively into the 1960s before retiring due to neck pain. Since the 1970s, she has been the girls’ golf coach at Crescent Valley High School in her hometown of Corvallis.

Personal
DeMoss graduated from Oregon State University in 1952, but did not compete collegiately as Oregon State did not have a women’s golf team until the 1970s. Following her graduation, DeMoss married Howard Smith and golfed as “Mrs. Grace DeMoss Smith” or “Mrs. Howard Smith” for several years. She was later married to Fred C. Zwahlen Jr., who was the Founder and Chairman of the Department of Journalism at Oregon State, from the late 1950s until his death in 2004. Her family is linked to at least two other Oregon sports heroes: her sister Maxine married Oregon State football Rose Bowl MVP Don Durdan, and another sister, Rae Ardis, married Durdan’s Rose Bowl teammate Quentin Greenough.

Honors
She was named to the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 1986, the Oregon State University Sports Hall of Fame in 1991, and the Pacific Northwest Golf Association Hall of Fame in 1993.

Peter Erling Jacobsen (born March 4, 1954) is an American professional golfer.

Early life
Jacobsen was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. He graduated from Portland’s Lincoln High School. He played golf in college at the University of Oregon.

Golf career
Jacobsen is one of golf’s most colorful personalities, that makes him quite popular with fans. He has always been a fine golfer, with a 23 year stretch between first and last victories. He has played on two Ryder Cup teams (1985, 1995). His win at the 2003 Greater Hartford Open at age 49 made him one of the oldest to win on the PGA Tour. That year he was voted comeback player of the year.

Jacobsen currently plays mainly on the Champions Tour, and sometimes on the PGA Tour. In his first year of eligibility for senior golf he won the 2004 U.S. Senior Open, which is one of senior golf’s major championships, and he followed up with a second senior major at the 2005 Senior Players Championship. These are the only two wins Jacobsen has on the Champions Tour, an accomplishment also reached by golfing greats Arnold Palmer, whose first two wins on what was then the Senior PGA Tour were both majors, and Jack Nicklaus, whose first six wins on the Senior PGA Tour were all majors. Jacobsen was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.

Jacobsen also has two shows on The Golf Channel: Peter Jacobsen Plugged In, and Peter and Friends. Both are panel discussion shows, although Plugged In has more variety to it, featuring bands like Hootie and the Blowfish, and also Jacobsen’s own band, whereas Peter and Friends is entirely discussion.

Peter is known for his laid-back, humorous personality. During a three-day charity event in Oregon that he hosts, The Challenge, he is known to do impressions of other players, such as Craig Stadler. The Golf Channel has even filmed Jacobsen during the event, and has released a DVD and VHS of the footage, titled “Peter’s Party.”

Peter Jacobsen also owns Peter Jacobsen Productions. This company has run various golf tournaments including the JELD-WEN Tradition, one of the majors on the Champions Tour. Until 2002 it also produced the Fred Meyer Challenge, an annual Oregon tournament.

Family
Jacobsen married in December 1976 to Jan. The couple have three children: Amy born in 1980, Kristen born in 1982, and Mickey born in 1984.

PGA Tour wins (7)
1980 (1) Buick-Goodwrench Open
1984 (2) Colonial National Invitation, Sammy Davis Jr.-Greater Hartford Open
1990 (1) Bob Hope Chrysler Classic
Egan was born in 1884 in Chicago, Illinois, which at the end of the 19th century was the epicenter of golf in the United States—the first 18-hole golf course in the United States, the Chicago Golf Club, was built there in 1893. Egan played his first game of golf in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin at the age of 12. He was accepted to Harvard University, where he soon became the captain of the college golf team. The team won three team NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships from 1902 to 1904, and Egan won the individual title in 1902.

Championships and Olympics
Egan won his first non-collegiate tournament in the 1902 Western Amateur, which was played at the Chicago Golf Club. Not only was the tournament played in his hometown, but the runner-up was his cousin Walter Egan. A year later, the Egan cousins switched places with Walter winning and Chandler coming in second, and Chandler Egan would win the tournament again in 1904, 1905 (with Walter again the runner-up), and 1907.

In 1904, Egan achieved the pinnacle of U.S. amateur golf success by winning the U.S. Amateur Championship, played at Baltusrol Golf Club in New Jersey. He defended his title a year later at his home turf of the Chicago Golf Club.

Egan appeared to be peaking at the right time to also win an individual gold medal at the 1904 Summer Olympics, which featured golf for the last time in 1904. While Egan’s U.S. team (which also included cousin Walter) won team gold, Egan had to settle for individual silver, as he was defeated by Canadian George Lyon, who at 46, was more than twice Egan’s age. Egan later admitted he had been outclassed by the wily Lyon, whose massive drives forced Egan out of his usual game.

Move to Oregon
Following his runner-up finish in the 1909 U.S. Amateur, Egan abruptly disappeared from competition. He reappeared in the news in May 1911 with his purchase of 115 acres of apple and pear orchard in Medford, Oregon. He reemerged on the competitive golf circuit in 1914, with a runner-up finish in the Pacific Northwest Amateur championship to Jack Neville. A year later, Egan and Neville would meet again, and this time, Egan was the winner. He would win the Pacific Northwest Amateur four more times, in 1920, 1923, 1925, and 1932. Egan traveled south to win the California Amateur in 1926. He played on two U.S. championship Walker Cup teams in 1930 and 1934.

Golf architecture
In the 1920s, Egan moved into golf course design, designing such notable Oregon courses as the Eugene Country Club, Eastmoreland Golf Course, Oswego Lake Country Club, Riverside Golf & Country Club, and Tualatin Country Club. In 1929, Egan partnered with legendary golf architect Alister MacKenzie to renovate Pebble Beach Golf Links for the 1929 U.S. Amateur, in which Egan played and reached the semifinals.

Death and legacy
In 1936, Egan had completed plans for West Seattle Golf Course in Seattle, and was working on plans for the Legion Memorial Golf Course in Everett, Washington when he came down with pneumonia and died shortly thereafter. His funeral was held in Seattle and he was buried in Medford.

Egan was named to the Pacific Northwest Golf Association Hall of Fame in 1985, and the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.
