Situated in the upmarket Johannesburg suburb of Dowerglen, Glendower Golf Club is rated as one of the finest courses in South Africa. Many Sunshine Tour events, Challenge Matches and three South African Opens have been played at this stunning venue since it opened in 1937. Mr. Allison, an English golf course architect, designed this championship layout and construction was assigned to the South African professional golfer, Mr. A. F. Tomsett.
Tall and majestic trees frame perfectly manicured kikuyu fairways and help the player visualize shape of shot from the tee in order to navigate his or her way around the ten excellent par fours on offer at Glendower. Straight hitting will be rewarded with the opportunity to hit medium to short irons into well protected, large, fast and undulating USGA Spec Bentgrass greens which require intelligent reading skills, judgement of pace and a solid putting stroke. Depending on the skill of the golfer, the four par fives can be reached in two, but with water coming into play on some, a more cautious three-shot route could be the better option. A selection of four of the prettiest par threes any golfer could imagine need accuracy and full concentration to hit the target otherwise the players’ short game and bunker play will come under close scrutiny - that is assuming you have missed the water which comes into play on three of them!  Â
Officially declared a Nature Reserve in 1973, an abundance of colourful bird life, trees, shrubs and flowering gardens create kaleidoscopic backdrops making your walk around this great golf course an extremely relaxing and pleasant visual experience. The clubhouse at this superb venue boasts excellent bar, restaurant and conference facilities and is serviced by a highly efficient, friendly staff who create the perfect atmosphere in which to enjoy a long, cold sundowner on the verandah that provides scenic views of this golfing paradise!
